The progression of skills breaks down component skills and understandings that are requisites for learning the standard. To provide an effective intervention, identify what skills students need to develop before additional work with the standard.

Other Common Misconceptions

Avoid having students memorize the properties of the shapes. Students need to have many experiences that allow they to explore, compare, and move shapes around. Avoid calling a rhombus a diamond and an ellipse an oval. Students may think that a hexagon always looks like the yellow pattern block. Show regular and irregular pentagons and hexagons. The use of a geoboard is a good way to have students explore the various shapes.
